In mid-June, VAVA in collaboration with the Thai Binh Provincial Association, the General Nguyen Chi Thanh Museum and the family of Mr. Vu Chinh and Mrs. Pham Ngoc Nhan held a ceremony to present gifts for 93 families of Agent Orange victims in Dong Hung district. Among the recipients, each of the 33 poor families of AO victims in Dong Phong commune received 2 million VND; 60 families of AO victims in the remaining communes of the district received 1 million VND each, and 24 victims of the Centers under the Provincial Association received 1 million VND each.
At the ceremony, Mr. Pham Xuan Hung, VAVA’s Vice President, expressed his honor to accompany the family of General Nguyen Chi Thanh in this action. He said: These meaningful gifts carry the wholehearted sentiments of the family of General Nguyen Chi Thanh; the General's son, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, has also continued the glorious tradition of the family as contributing greatly to the cause of building and defending the Fatherland. In particular, Vinh has made great contributions to the mitigation of the war consequences, especially the care for victims of Agent Orange, from the development of the Association to the mobilization of domestic and foreign resources to help the victims. Although Vinh has passed away, his family, especially his wife, Ms. Dang Thi Minh Ngoc, still spare her best sentiment for the victims. On behalf of the AO victims in the whole country and Dong Hung district, in particular, Hung expressed his deep gratitude to the family of General Nguyen Chi Thanh and hoped that in the future, the family will continue to care and support the victims of Agent Orange/dioxin.
Attending the ceremony, comrade Vo Van Truong, Deputy Secretary of the District Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Committee of Dong Hung district, expressed his gratitude to the family of General Nguyen Chi Thanh, the Museum of General Nguyen Chi Thanh and VAVA for giving meaningful gifts to the AO victims in the district in particular and the people of Thai Binh in general to share the difficulties and disadvantages of the families of AO victims in Dong Hung district, especially the poor ones. He stressed that, for those families, the timely encouragement is also a motivation for them to be confident and strive to overcome difficulties and rise up in life.
Ms. Dang Thi Minh Ngoc, the late Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh’s wife, representing the family and members of the delegation expressed her gratitude and appreciation for the contributions of previous generations, including war veterans and participants who were exposed to toxic chemicals and sacrificed their lives for the cause of national independence, freedom and reunification.
Ngoc shared that her family always have special sentiment for the Vietnamese AO victims, because this was also the wish of Senior Lieutenant General Vinh when he was alive who was always concerned about the issue of Agent Orange/dioxin in Vietnam and considered the issue of Agent Orange as an international one.
