Speech of the Association of Victims of Agent Orange/dioxin Vietnam: War Legacies and Reconciliation Initiative “Dialogue on War Legacies and Peace” – USIP

Overcoming the consequences of war is an urgent and deeply humanitarian task, as well as a responsibility of all levels of society with the goal of protecting human health, environment and socio-economic development.

For Vietnam, the consequences of war and especially the effects of Agent Orange/dioxin to the environment and the Vietnamese people are still very heavy, still existing until today and will continue in the future.

This article focuses on the issue of people - Agent Orange (AO) victims.

aspects of the socio-economic conditions that AO victims are facing;

achievements in the relationship between Vietnam and the United States through solving the problem of AO;

(3) and recommend some measures to best support the AO victims.

1. Issues on health and life of AO victims – What is the biggest achievement in addressing the effects of Agent Orange, on the environment, and health in Vietnam so far? What we need to do and how to continue to progress it successfully.

Agent Orange has destroyed nature, destroyed human health, caused many serious diseases.

The consequences of Agent Orange contamination in terms of the human, is the most difficult problem, and Vietnam is the only country affected by Agent Orange/dioxin in the war with the largest scale and a longest time.

There are 4,8 million people were exposed and 3 million people were victims of Agent Orange in Vietnam. The consequences of Agent Orange have been passed on to the fourth generation (great-grandchildren) of the original victims.

Currently, we have started to conduct nationwide surveys on the number of AO victims from children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

According to initial survey data in some provinces, there are more than 150,000 victims that belong to the second generation (children), 35,000 victims belong to the third generation (grandchildren) and about 6,000 victims belong to the fourth generation (grandchildren).

The data presented is from the many investigations, conferences and scientific studies (with the participation of foreign and American scientists), in which VAVA organized.
